The Board is the local authority for education, library and youth services in the district council areas of Ards, Castlereagh, Down, Lisburn and North Down in Northern Ireland. Covering most of Co Down and a small part of
Co Antrim, the area served by the Board stretches from Bangor southwards to Newcastle and eastwards from Lisburn and surrounding area over to Portaferry on the Ards Peninsula.
